Es una red de dispositivos conectados dentro de una ubicación específica y su función principal se centra en poder compartir datos y recursos. Este tipo de red puede ser cableada, inalámbrica o la combinación de las dos. Las redes LAN inalámbricas generalmente se crean utilizando una señal WI-FI. Aquí aparece un concepto igual de importante; el rother o enrutador; es un dispositivo el cual actúa como puente central que permite que los dispositivos, computadores, tablets y celulares se conecten entre sí, normalmente en enrutador esta contentado a un modem o cable DLS.

Un computador también puede interactuar como el punto central de acceso de una LAN, en este caso la computadora; actúa como un servidor que le proporciona a los dispositivos que están conectados acceso a los archivos y programas ubicados en el servidor.

Las redes de área local LAN suelen tener una conexión limitada de varios kilómetros que normalmente son de propiedad privada y se pueden encontrar en edificios, oficinas y centros educativos. Se utilizan para compartir los recursos físicos como: el acceso a Internet, archivos, programas, telefonía, IP, e impresoras. Brindando una gran capacidad de trasmisión de datos a cualquier receptor o equipo dentro de la LAN.
